Back in 1998 I found myself out of money but with an opportunity to get into the army and start making some. The only thing was, I had to pass the fitness test and I didn't have a gym membership.
Previously to this, I had spent a lot of years doing traditional weight training and had put on quite a bit of muscular weight but not without access to the gym, everything I knew about training was out the window.
But it turned out to be a good thing...
I started running, doing chin ups off the apartment balcony and doing pushups. I used the ideas I learned from my bodybuilding days but adapted to the equipment I had available.
Long story short? I passed my military fitness test and got into the army. I won two awards for most physically fit recruit...but this was just the start.
Little did I know, that this was just going to be the beginning of my life long affair with bodyweight training and workout not only to look good but also feel and perform great too.
Once in the military, I found myself either in the woods, on tour of duty or pressed for time working under weird schedules and conditions that made a traditional weight training program all but impossible.
This turned out to be a blessing...
It seemed every time I did heavy, progressive, intense weight training for more than a couple months, I got sore, stiff, tired and low on energy when I got further into the training cycle.
I found myself doing more and more bodyweight training. The more I did, the better I felt and performed. I got stronger, more flexible and my daily energy levels went through the roof.
After I got out of the military I kept going with the bodyweight training except for a brief stint where I got back into bodybuilding to win a local show.
Guess what? I got injured tight and started to dread the workouts. So I went back to the training that I looked forward to and made me feel great.
